Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this portfolio is to organize and reflect what I have learned during my three years in the Master of Science in Education in Professional School Counseling program at Buena Vista University. This portfolio includes documents from both my K-8 practicum experience and my 5-12 practicum experience at Colo-NESCO Community School District during the 2013-2014 school year. This portfolio also contains my professional resume, which details my experiences both before and during my enrollment at Buena Vista University.
This portfolio is organized into three sections. The first section includes this statement of purpose, my professional resume, my transcripts from Buena Vista University, the State of Iowa School Counseling Standards, and a copy of my Class G License to practice K-12 Professional School Counseling. The second section includes a self evaluation of which of the State of Iowa School Counseling Standards I view as areas of strength and which standards I view as areas in need of improvement. The statement of professional preparation and goals in section two details my plan to improve upon the standards identified as areas in need of improvement. Section two also contains detailed reflections of each area of strength and area in need of improvement with artifacts detailing the work I have done in each of these standards. The third section includes documents reflecting my two practicum experiences including: the State of Iowa Standard 12a and 12b, my elementary and secondary practicum hour logs, my professional school counselor practicum performance evaluations, and my final entry reflection paper.
This portfolio gives the reader a glimpse of what I have learned thus far in my experience as a graduate student and a K-12 school counselor. It also paints a picture of what type of school counselor I will become in the future as I work on achieving my goals. I do not view this portfolio as an exhaustive list of my skills and potential as a school counselor since I am only just beginning my career and I am continually growing and developing.
I would like to acknowledge those who have supported me during my journey to become a professional school counselor. First and foremost, my family and friends for supporting me every step of the way, my cohort and professors at Buena Vista University for being a constant source of support and inspiration, and my past and current employers and colleagues for providing me with invaluable experience as I develop my school counseling skills.
