Standard and competencies represented:
I collected these artifacts during my work as K-12 School Counselor at Colo-NESCO CSD during the 2013-2014 school year to demonstrate the work I do to address Standard 7, professional orientation, of the State of Iowa School Counseling Standards. The specific competencies that I chose to address are: competency 1 – apply knowledge of history, roles, organizational structures, ethics, standards, and credentialing; competency 2 – maintain a high level of professional knowledge and skills; and competency 4 – articulate the counselor role to school personnel, parents, community, and students.
I believe one artifact that demonstrates both competency 1 and competency 4 of Standard 7 of the School Counseling Standards is the Colo-NESCO School Counseling website. I use the Colo-NESCO School Counseling website to clearly articulate the role of school counselor and describe the services I provide. On the homepage of the school counseling website I share the: ASCA National Model, ASCA Ethical Standards, ASCA Role Statement, and ASCA National Standards for Students. The services that I provide to students as the school counselor are clearly explained throughout the pages of the Colo-NESCO School Counseling website.
An artifact that demonstrates competencies 1 and 2 of Standard 7 of the School Counseling Standards is the Jessica Radmaker Professional Development 2013-2014 document that I created, which lists all of the professional development opportunities that I took advantage of throughout the school year. I demonstrated competency 1 by working to advocate for school counselors with my participation in the Iowa Association for College Admission Counseling and Iowa School Counselor Association’s Visit the Hill event in Des Moines, Iowa on February 25, 2014. At this event I was able to speak with my local representative and senator about issues pertinent to school counselors and educators in general. The Jessica Radmaker Professional Development 2013-2014 document clearly lists all of the conferences, classes, webinars, and trainings that I have attended. Participation in some of these events resulted in certificates of completion including: Building Capacity Beginning Teacher Certificate, Mental Health First Aid USA Training Certificate, Second Step Certificate of Online Training Completion, and Bullying in Schools: What Can We Do Webinar Certificate of Completion.
I also demonstrate competencies 1 and 2 of standard 7 of the School Counseling Standards by maintaining state and national memberships in school counseling organizations and continually updating my counseling skills and knowledge of the school counseling field. I am a member of both the Iowa School Counselor Association and the American School Counselor Association. I make sure to continually update my school counseling skills by being an avid reader of school counseling journals and blogs. I recently created my own school counseling website, Jessica Radmaker - Professional School Counselor, were I am working to share helpful websites, blogs, and various articles and books related to professional school counseling. This website is a work in progress but the ultimate goal is to be a resource for other professional school counselors to utilize. I also demonstrate competency 2 by making sure to prominently display my Class G License to practice K-12 Professional School Counseling in my office at school.
I consider myself knowledgeable about the role of the professional school counselor and I feel like I can clearly articulate appropriate and inappropriate uses of my time as a school counselor. I had to work hard to advocate for a more efficient use of my time as school counselor this school year. I had several meetings with the school superintendent and principals to express my concerns and work to reevaluate my job description at Colo-NESCO Community School District.
Demonstration of my learning and mastery:
I believe these artifacts clearly demonstrate my continued learning and mastery of the school counseling field. I take every opportunity available to learn and develop my school counseling skills. I also make the effort to better understand topics and mandates specific to education in general. I know how important it is to seek continuous education in a rapidly changing world with a continually evolving view of what it means to be a school counselor. I know that in order to eventually achieve my ideal school counselor position I will have to continue advocating for myself as school counselor and school counselors in general.
My personal goals and my growth as a professional school counselor:
I believe these artifacts clearly demonstrate my goal to continually better myself as a school counselor. I take every opportunity available to increase my knowledge when it comes to school counseling issues and education topics. I know that I will not cease to be a ‘student’ when I graduate from the Buena Vista University Professional School Counseling program. I have learned what works and what does not work when it comes to advocating for my position and will adjust my strategies in the future accordingly.
My plans for additional growth or improvement:
My plans for additional growth and improvement in Standard 7 of the School Counseling Standards is to continue seeking out professional development opportunities. I also plan to more actively advocate for myself as a school counselor both at the local level in my school and at the state and national level. I know one thing I could do next year that I was unable to do this school year is do a presentation for the Colo-NESCO School Board to help them better understand what I do as K-12 School Counselor and advocate for the addition of another school counselor to the growing school district. I could also work to advocate for school counselors at the state and national level by attending events like Visit the Hill and lobbying for school counselors. I plan to seek out a position on the Iowa School Counselor Association’s board, which I believe will allow me to advocate even more for school counselors.
