Standard and competencies represented:
I collected these artifacts during my work as K-12 School Counselor at Colo-NESCO CSD during the 2013-2014 school year to demonstrate the work I do to address Standard 5, career development, education, and postsecondary planning, of the State of Iowa School Counseling Standards. The specific competencies that I chose to address are: competency 1- assist students in the assessment of their individual strengths, weaknesses, and differences, including those that relate to academic achievement and future plans; competency 2 – apply knowledge of career assessment and career choice programs; and competency 4 – develop a counseling network and provide resources for use by students in personalizing the exploration of postsecondary educational opportunities.
I believe one artifact that clearly demonstrates competencies 1, 2 and 4 of Standard 5 of the School Counseling Standards is the 2013-2014 Colo-NESCO Student Career Development and Planning document I created. This document clearly lists the career development and planning opportunities that, as school counselor, I provided to Colo-NESCO students during the 2013-2014 school year. Students had the opportunity to take the PSAT/NMSQT, which gave them access to My College QuickStart and MyRoad—both valuable interest profiling and career planning tools. Students were invited to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test, which gave them access to the ASVAB Career Exploration Program—another valuable interest profiling and career planning tool. Students were also given the opportunity to take the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) test. Upon completion of this test, students were awarded certificates based on their test results and gained access to CareerReady 101/KeyTrain, which helps students develop the skills necessary for successful entrance into the workplace and helps students explore careers and develop a resume. Students completed I Have A Plan Iowa, which helps 8th-12th grade students profile their interests and plan for high school and postsecondary success. I also used portions of I Have A Plan Iowa and Roads to Success with 6th grade students during a large group counseling unit focused on career and college exploration. Information about all of these tests and programs is linked on the Colo-NESCO School Counseling website.
I will share several artifacts that I believe demonstrate competency 4 of Standard 5 of the School Counseling Standards. The first being the 2013-2014 Colo-NESCO Student Events document that I created lists the career and college exploration events and field trips planned by myself for Colo-NESCO students during the 2013-2014 school year. These events were well attended by students and offered valuable information about various careers and education paths.
I worked closely with Kandice Roethler, the Colo-NESCO Talented and Gifted and Homeschool Coordinator, to plan and implement the Colo-NESCO Career/College Fair, which was held at the high school on February 6, 2014. We networked with the Ames Chamber of Commerce, several local businesses, numerous college representatives, and other local school counselors in the planning of this event. All Colo-NESCO 7th-12th grade students and their parents were encouraged to attend the Colo-NESCO Career/College Fair. Students from several neighboring school districts were also invited to attend. We ended up having a very successful turnout for this event. Each attendee was given a Colo-NESCO Career/College Fair Student Information Packet upon arrival and encouraged to speak with both the college representatives and the local business people in attendance. Many Colo-NESCO teachers offered students extra credit for their attendance and all students who spoke with three businesses and two college representatives were awarded free breakfast pizza the following week. Both Kandice and I received an overwhelmingly positive response from students, parents, faculty, administrators, and community members about this event, as evidenced in these e-mails and notes: E-Mail from Parent/Employer about the Career/College Fair, E-Mail from Parent/School Board Member about the Career/College Fair, E-Mail from Teacher about the Career/College Fair, E-Mail from 7-12 Principal about the Career/College Fair, and Note from 5-6 Principal about the Career/College Fair.
Demonstration of my learning and mastery:
I believe these artifacts demonstrate my learning and mastery of Standard 5 of the School Counseling Standards. I know that it is necessary to not only assess student interests, strengths, and weakness, but also to clearly explain these assessment results and link them to useful career exploration programs like the programs listed above. I worked hard during the 2013-2014 school year to ensure that students were offered valuable and useful assessment opportunities. I clearly see the necessity and value of building a vast network to provide resources for use by students in personalizing the exploration of postsecondary educational opportunities. I worked very closely with several organizations and individuals to plan and implement the Colo-NESCO Career/College Fair. I also make sure to keep the Colo-NESCO School Counseling website updated with the most relevant and useful information I find for students, parents, faculty, and community members.
My personal goals and my growth as a professional school counselor:
These artifacts clearly demonstrate my goal to provide students with the best career development, education, and postsecondary planning that I possibly can. Looking back I can see what assessments were most useful to students and where changes could possibly be made in the future. I will continue to seek out the most up-to-date and useful career and college planning and exploration programs available for student use. I learned very quickly the value of developing a vast network of like-minded professionals. The Colo-NESCO Career/College Fair would never have come about if this network I built for myself did not exist. I know that in the future I will continue to work on my networking skills.
My plans for additional growth or improvement:
My plans for additional growth and improvement in Standard 5 of the School Counseling Standards is to continue seeking out events and opportunities that will broaden the horizons of the students I serve. I believe I could do more with local businesses to plan tours and informational presentations for students. I also believe I could encourage and even facilitate more college visits. I know I could work to implement more job shadowing opportunities for students as well.
